Tools and materials A 19 mm board made of agglomerate, plywood or solid pine for the table; 5 x 2 cm pine slats for the folding support and for the bracket support attached to the wall; tapes to shape the plank; 5 cm folding hinges for the table and for the foldable support under the table; screws, wood dowels and white carpenters glue; screwdriver, coping saw, drill or planing machine.
Choosing the material Different materials can be used to make a table of these characteristics, al of which are easy to find in DIY shops and specialised stores. They can be made of agglomerate covered in natural wood, agglomerate covered in melamine, plywood or solid wood, above all pine and beech.
Cut to size The first step is to find where to locate the table, take detailed measurements and then cut the wood. First make a sawing mark along the wood and cut with a coping saw. A good piece of advice is to ensure that the outer edges are slightly curved; in this way possible accidents can be avoided, especially those involving children.
The parts A standard folding table should have the main board and two small slats of the same width as the table. These two slats should be drilled or screwed into bracket and attached to the wall with wall plugs. The folding hinges should then be attached to the frontal part and screwed into the edge of the table. Once the hinges have been screwed in, the board can be placed in a fully vertical position against the wall when not in use, thus taking up very little space. When used as a table it simply needs to be lowered on to the support.
Table support A fully workable folding table requires a support system for when it is opened, thus allowing it to be kept in a fully horizontal position. A moving support that is resistant and can be bent to one side thus needs to be bought or made. It is best made of solid wood. It has two parts: two vertical T-shaped slats drilled into the wall and a triangle-shaped frame which can be stuck together with plugs or carpenters glue. Both parts need to be joined to two frames that open and close to the left or to the right. A planing saw needs to be used to cut the angles.
Finishing off the board If the table is made of agglomerate, the surface needs to be rounded off. This can be done with sticky tape and a hot iron to smooth on the adhesive. If the agglomerate is covered in solid wood, or if the board is made of plywood or pine, it must be treated with varnish or water-based paint or enamel, as per your requirements. Different colours can be chosen to match your kitchens decoration.
