What to do with doors and windows that don't close properly
by Manuel G. Blzquez
After years of wear and tear, windows and doors get out of line and need small repairs. Causes vary from problems with frames, strap hinges or regular hinges to warping. Here we tell you how to fix them.

Tools
Saw, brush, sandpaper, firmer chisel, white carpenter's glue, hinges, new screws.

If the door drags a little
This is easy to fix. There are several tricks:
If the door drags along the floor a bit -- normally this occurs on the outer edge - tape some sandpaper to the floor. You will thus see exactly where the drags from the marks on the sandpaper.
Open and close the door several times so it rubs against the sandpaper. You will see how gradually it closes more smoothly.
When you think you've scraped enough from the door, remove the sandpaper and tape from the floor.
If the problem is with a window that does not close properly, sand it down with an electric sander if possible. The job will be easier if you take the window down from the wall. You can also shave it down a bit with a firmer chisel.

Problems with hinges or strap hinges

First check what condition they are in. Just by looking you will be able to see if the screws are loose. Tighten them to see if they go back in place. Sometimes all you need to do is remove the old screws and replace them with longer ones.
If the problem is an orifice that has grown too large, take the hinges off, drill an even larger hole with a bit designed for wood. Apply some carpenter's glue to a peg the same width as the hole and then insert it. Let dry, even if off and put the hinge back on. The screw will dig in perfectly this time.
If the problem is that the hinges or strap hinges are worn, don't hesitate to replace them. If necessary, change their position. A makeshift solution is to simply put the higher one where the lower one was, and vice versa.
If there is a lot of empty space in the upper section, you might want to put a small washer in each of the pivots of the hinge, assuming their design allows this. This will raise the door as much as the width of the washers and keep it from dragging.

Brushing the wood
If the problem lies in the edges of the doors or window, you have no choice but to use a brush and must unhinge the door or window.
Place it on a workbench or the floor, up against a wall or piece of furniture, and take care not damage it.
Run the manual or electric brush against the edge until you have shaved off as much as necessary. Put the door or window back in place now and again to check your work, so as not to remove too much. Try to brush inward in the upper and lower edges so as not to harm the wood.
If you have to brush the outer edge work in the same direction.

Problems with paint
Sometimes an accumulation of paint can prevent doors and windows from closing properly.
If this is the case, you must remove or sand down as many layers of paint as you can and then reapply the paint or varnish.
Do this on the frame as well.

After laying down a new floor
If you lay down a new floor, be it parquet, tile or cork, you may need to trim the base of the door.
It is best to do this with a manual, electric or circular saw.
Measure the height of the floor, and add a few millimeters.
Take the door down and saw. The job will go better if you use a pair of clamps to guide you as you cut.
