Changing the direction of a door
by Manuel G. Blzquez
Changing the direction in which a door opens is a simple task. You are only going to need assistance when it comes to removing or checking the position of the door. The locks and hinges have a position, for left or right-hand opening, which you must be aware before buying the correct iron fittings.

Tools and materials
Screwdrivers, chisel, mace, sandpapers, measuring tape, carpenters square, marker, drill, wooden blocks, white glue, varnish and new hinges for doors.

Removing old fittings
After removing the door, all the fittings need to be removed from both the frame and the door itself.
This is a very simple task that can be done with a standard screwdriver.

New hinges
Lift up the door with wedges and mark the height of the hinges and locks with a pencil.
Mark the position of the hinges on the edge of the door and on the doorframe. Then measure the width using the corresponding part of the hinge. You can also do this with a marker.
With a sharp chisel and mace, scrape down to the correct width. Check with the door's hinge every now and again.
When the door fits perfectly in the frame, sandpaper down to leave it as smooth as possible.
Screw in the new hinges, fit the door in the frame and check that it opens and closes easily.

New locks or latches
Depending on if it is an interior or entrance door you are working on, fit on a lock or a latch with a handle. Check the height and depth of the lock before slotting it in and use a drill and bits for wood.
Check several times that the fittings are correct. In the doorframe, a hole needs to be made for the locking device.
Also make a hole or holes for the knob or other type of handle.

Replacing the old fittings
The holes left by the old fittings need to be filled in with small pieces of wood of the same colour as the door.
Cut, screw in and glue the pieces. In the knob holes fit in a cylindrical pole of the correct width and depth.
Sandpaper, paint and varnish, depending on the door finish.
