Tools and materials A halogen track or cable kit, iron fittings, transformer and lamp required for the installation. Drill, plugs, screws and screwdrivers as well as a ladder or stool.
The system The most advisable way of installing a halogen track is to buy a kit in accordance to the size of the room. Such a kit comes with all the elements of the system: two plastic-covered cables to be installed in parallel fashion, rods for fitting halogen lamps, four cable holders, two turnbuckles, four plugs and four screws for attaching to the wall.
Choosing the spot Choose a spot between two walls to fit the halogen track. It is vital to know the height so that it can be fitted parallel to the ceiling. Mark the points where you intend to install the plugs to attach the cables. You will need two on each wall and they must be at the same height and at least 10 cm apart. Once the plugs are in, screw in the four open screws. Attach the cables to one end and the turnbuckles to the other. These turnbuckles have two further eye screws, one open for the cable, and the other closed, to attach to the wall. They can be adjusted a few millimetres, or even a few centimetres, to ensure the cable is in place. The cable is tied up in a bow at each end and placed in a cable holder (thimble), which keeps it firmly in place with a nut.
Transformer and rods Choose where to place the current transformer. Remember that its cables must reach a nearby socket, otherwise you will have to extend it. If necessary, it is best to install a new socket (which could be hidden with coverings) than extend the transformer cable. The connection to the current is made via the cable and transformer terminals. The double rod that keeps the halogen lamp in place is firmly screwed on to the cable with its own system. Average out the distance so that the set up is aesthetically pleasing. There is an alternative to a transformer with plug: use the transformer of a ceiling lamp by connecting to its cable. In this way you can switch the halogen set up on and off from the rooms light switch.
