Tools and materials Monkey wrench. Allen keys of the correct size, string made of hemp or Teflon. A new valve(some new models includea thermostat). Cleaning cloth and a small bucket for water.
Radiator parts Generally a radiator has three parts where the hot water may be regulated. The water enters through the upper piping. This is connected to the radiator through a valve and two nuts that are installed in one of two upper holes of the radiator. The side on which thevalce is located depends on the wall or house, but it is usually on the right.
The radiator has two more holes on the lower part that have their own closing mechanism (normally with an allen nut) to installa drain tube.
Thisdrain hole is chosen depending on the direction in which it is connected: if it has been connected on the right, thedrain tubemust be connected to the lower left hole. If it is connected on the left, the lower right hand hole must be used. The spare hole must be covered with a special screw top.
The third element is the draining mechanism, which is usually automatic.
Removing an old valve oFor the sake of precaution, it is best to empty the water from the heating system. Empty the system using the draining key which some radiators have on the lowest part of the system, often in the bathroom. If this does not exist, the water can be emptied from any radiator into a bucket usingit's drain tube. oTwo monkey wrenches can be used to loosen the screws that keep the valve tight. o Make sure one of the screws is held tight with a wrench while you unscrew the other. oThe tightening screws remain in their respective pipes, one in the radiator and the other in the wall.
Installing the new valve o Stick Teflon plaster on to the screw endings of the new valve. This is not completely necessary but enables better water retention. o Install the new key and tighten the screws manually. o Finally, using the monkey wrench tight each screw while holding the other one with a wrench to prevent breakages. o Fill up the system if you emptied it using the heater fillingkey and check that the radiator does not drip and heats up correctly.
