Domestic window installation
By Elena Puche
In the installation of a window, as in any other glasswork task that we are going to carry out, it is fundamental that we take certain safety precautions such as frame precision, care in the handling of materials and an adequate set of tools.

Materials needed: metal tape measure, a glazier's hammer, spatula, a felt tip pen, pliers and putty. You should carry out all tasks whilst wearing protective gloves, and if you are going to cut glass, you should also use protective goggles.

Removing broken glass
If you are going to install a new window pane where one has been broken, using your hands (protected by your gloves), you should get rid of the loose remains. For those which are still stuck to the frame, it will be necessary to use a hammer, giving light blows with a cold chisel. The small fragments that remain lodged inside the frame can be taken out with pincers or pliers in order to cut the glass. Remove the remains with a dry paintbrush.

Measuring and cutting
With the metal measuring tape, measure the depth of the track of the frame in all its contours. Likewise, take diagonal measurements of the frame. Once you have the measurements, cut or have the glass cut a little under these measurements, doing so you will take into account the expansion effect. Calculate 1.5mm's difference and double it when the surface exceeds 370mm. With the glass already cut and ready for installation, with a wax pencil or a felt tip pen mark the side of the glass which face outwards. By doing this, you will make sure of the precision of the adjustment of the glass.

Preparation and application of the putty
Mix the putty until it becomes soft and acquires an adequate consistency in order to be able to work with it. Roll out a line of putty approximately 3mm's thick, apply it with your thumb in the grooves of the frame.

Securing of the glass
Secure the lower edge of the pane, placing it in the putty. After, press down on the glass and resting it in the remainder of the frame which already has had putty added. Use pressure so that the putty start to overflow and remove the excess with a spatula. Leave a space of approximately 1.5mm's the back part of the glass and the track of the frame.

Installing the frame
Hammer in the nails of the frame, at a distance of 1.5cm, parallel to the sheet. Immediately afterwards place putty in a regular fashion making an angle in the outer groove of the frame. Smoothen it over with the spatula. In the corners, rest it against the frame until you form a 45 angle and lower it softly.

Painting the putty
After a space of two or three weeks, at least, you will be able to paint the putty, taking the precaution to use adhesive tape around the edge of the frame and the glass so that they do not get stained by the pain.
