Tools and materials A drill with 6 and 8mm bits, wall plugs, screws, a screwdriver and ladder.

Mark the spot for the first fastener oIf you already know how long you want the rod to be, order one like this in the hardware store. If you don't, you will have to run a test on your window and saw the rod to the right length, be it wooden or metal. oAt one end of the window place the fastening mechanism you will use to hold the rod in place. oPrior to this you can mark the exact place with the rod itself or a pole, with a level. oIf there is someone working with you, stepping back from the wall they can tell you if you have the right spot. oDrill a hole and screw in the first fastening mechanism.

Now the second one oHold the end of the rod in place over the first hole and at the other end find the right spot for the second one. oIt will be easier if you have already marked it. In any case, either with a level or another person, and with the curtain in place, it is a good idea for the fasteners of the rod to be the same distance from each end and perfectly horizontal. oDrill the second hole, insert a wall plug and screw in the fastener. oPut the rod in place, tighten the small screws and hang the curtains. If the rod has decorative covers on the sides you must take this into consideration when you install the fastening mechanisms and cut the rod to the right length. This is especially true if there are walls on either side of the window that impede or modify the installation.

Blinds oThese have their own mechanism for rolling up and dropping down. But the way to hang them is easy, and similar to that of curtain rods. oThe mechanism will rest on two or more brackets which you screw into the wall in the right places. oOnce the brackets are in place, the upper part of the blinds goes on either with pressure or screws, depending on the model. Some models use two or more hooks and eyebolts, as if they were simple Venetian blinds. Others use wooden or metal squares that screw into the wall and the rod rests on top of them.

A tip oThere are extendable metal rods that save the trouble of sawing it to fit, depending on the width of your windows and curtains. oIn any case, check first that this kind of rod will bear the weight of the curtain you want to install.
