Drill in construction materials
oThe most traditional use for drills is to bore holes in construction materials. With the right size and shape of bit, you can perforate all kinds of materials, such as brick, stone, plaster, plaster of Paris, cement mortar and concrete. o There are special bits for drilling in iron and other kinds of metal. o For wall and floor tiles, porcelain or non-hardened glass there are diamond-sharpened bits with a centering point. They are usually chilled with water and used at low speed. o Special crown saws can be used to make big holes, either in construction materials for installing control boxes for electrical equipment or in wood, say, to install a lock.

Drilling wood
oStandard bits are used to make holes in solid wood, be it soft or hard, and in particle board or plywood. The bits are distinguished by their tips. oCorner rounding bits have two blades and a centering point, and make cylindrical holes. They can be used on laminated surfaces. Among other purposes they can be used to make housings for concealed hinges, which are common in kitchen cabinets. o The best way to make holes in a perfectly straight line, to insert pegs in an assembly, is to use a column support. The drill remains fixed to the arm and the bit does not move as it goes down. There are also metal guides for making holes in a row, very useful for installing shelves and assembling furniture. o Use a spade bit or flat corner-rounding bit to make large holes in wood, as in the case of windows, doors or quick disconnecting fitting. They also work with Plaster of Paris, concrete slabs and plasterboard. o A clamp at the base keeps objects to be drilled from moving, be they flat, cylindrical or even metal tubes. o Countersinking bits makes holes that hide screws in wood.

Using a drills as a mechanical screwdriver
oMost drills sold these days are reversible. With the right fitting, this allows them to be used as screwdrivers. oThe automatic speed control allows you to adjust for the kind of material you are working with. oIt's best for the tip of the bit to be magnetic for better handling of the screw.

As a sander
oWith brushes featuring metal bristles, drills can be used to remove paint from wood or metal, and to remove rust. oWith circular brushes of abrasive nylon, drills can be used to clean surfaces, or strip paint and varnish. oWood can be sanded with cylinders or abrasive disks. It is best to do this job with the drill fastened to a workbench. oOne kind of sanding accessory is the polishing grip, used especially with metal surfaces. oWith a flexible transmission cable you can attach sand paper or rasps and reach difficult spots.

Other uses oTo mix paint or construction materials, when used with a mixing arm. oWith a special fitting you can remove knots from wood and replace them with plugs.
