How to furnish a bathroom
by Virginia Verdejo
A lack of light or space or the location of a bathroom sometimes make it hard to furnish it. Here we discuss some tips for getting the job done.

Furniture
Most times the easiest solution is to have the sink incorporated into a piece of furniture. This way you conceal the drain pipes and can use the bottom as storage space. There are two options: buy a ready-made cabinet, with the sink incorporated into it and suiting the space you have available, or have one made to order. In the first case there is an ample selection in stores, both in terms of style, materials and prices. So it wont be hard to find one right for your bathroom. Latest trends feature a glass sink with wood or metal for the cabinet. If you choose a glass sink, keep in mind that depending on where you place it, underneath you can see the entry pipes for the hot and cold water. And this may look less aesthetic than a porcelain sink. Made-to-order cabinets tend to be more expensive, especially if they are made of solid wood. But the advantage is that you have more freedom to choose the design and they fit your available space perfectly.

Counters
Most cabinets have counters made of marble or polished granite. Both are highly resistant to moisture and wear-and-tear, although every few years they need to be treated with a special polish. Glass or state of the art synthetic materials such as Silestone or Corian are other alternatives. They are clean and lasting and give the bathroom a young, casual look.
Wood is also elegant and when treated against moisture it has no reason to present problems. And for bathrooms tropical wood that tolerates moisture well tends to be used, such as iroko or wenge. In any case avoid plywood or particle board, which absorbs steam and deforms the wood fibers.

Acessories
A bathroom without accessories is boring and lacks personality. Small paintings with seaside scenes or shelves with plants if there is natural ight help make the atmosphere more pleasant.
For trays, baskets and shelves, chromium plated metal is the best choice. It resists moisture well. Accessories made of natural fibers and wood are damaged more easily.
