Tools and materials A container for the paint, roller, flat brush and smooth cotton cloth that is sold by weight in paint shops. Pick, smoother, scraper and plaster if the wall has to be prepared.

Preparation and first layer o If the wall is in bad condition it needs to be smoothed over with joint sealer or with a new layer of plasters. o If in good condition and with a plaster finish, which has never been painted on, apply two layers of matt-finish paint, leaving to dry between layers. o It can be applied with a brush but the most important thing is to cover all the possible defects or stains on the wall. o The next step is to apply the base colour in a single layer. Use the roller once more and paint the entire room.

Second shade of colour o Wait at least 24 hours after applying the base layer to ensure the paint is dry. Then apply the second colour. o Depending on the contrast you wish to achieve, you can apply another colour or even a couple of lighter or darker shades. o Use a wide brush to apply the paint, in irregular zig-zags. Cover a square metre or thereabouts to be able to work with ease. o With the cloth creased up, press on the recently-applied paint. Turn the cloth left and right and ensure the effect is as irregular as possible.

A trick o To better apply the second layer of paint, add some drops of glycerine (found in chemist's) to the paint.
