Rules to follow for painting a room
by Manuel G. Blzquez
Painting the rooms of your house is a task anyone can do. But no matter what kind of paint you use, you must follow a series of norms to make the job as simple as possible and get good results.

Tools and materials
Brushes, rollers, buckets or pans for the paint, tape, protective paper and plastic, paint, enamel, varnish, plaster for joints, a screwdriver and a spatula.

Calculate the paint
- On paint cans, manufacturers give an estimate of how much surface area they think the paint will cover. The average tends to 8 to 14 square meters per liter of water-based paint, which is the most common for walls and ceilings. Paints using dissolvents cover 12 to 16 square meters per liter. Texturized paints dont go as far: 2 to 4 square meters per liter.
- In any case the performance of the paint depends on what kind of surface you are painting and what condition it is in. Another factor is whether the surface already has paint on it.
- To measure the surface area of you room, measure the height of the walls by the width. Subtract spaces taken up by doors or windows, or measure by parts and add it all up.

Clear out the room
- To paint quickly and comfortably, remove as many obstacles as you can: furniture, tables, seats, pictures, beds etc. If you cant remove them altgother one good trick is to slide them into the middle of the room.
- Then, cover up everything that might be stained with paint: floors, lamps, door- and window-frames. Tape, paper and plastic will be very useful. It is better to avoid staining, rather than to clean up afterward.

Order to paint in
- First observe the condition of the walls and ceilings that are to be painted. Restore any flaw that might prevent you getting a good result. Paint special attention to cracks, or old paint that is loose. If you just paint over it, it might fall off altogether. If necessary, scrape away the old paint.
- If you are going to paint a whole room, do it in a logical working order. Try to work in natural daylight.
- Do the ceiling first. If you get paint on the walls it will be easy to remove or fix later. Begin close to a brightly lit window. The last layer of paint should be perpendicular to the rays of the sun. This will hide the brush or roller strokes.
- Now do the walls. Go from top to bottom first, at the part closest to the window. Try to finish entire walls to avoid streaks.
- If you are going to put enamel or varnish on the baseboard, do it after painting the walls. A the same time, complete the finish of the doors and windows. Doing the floor, if you are going to treat it with varnish, is the last task.
