| How to turn an old, unused drawer into your own chest |
 |
Utility: Use an old drawer or chest to store personal belongings.
Difficulty: Average.
Cost: Average.
Materials: - A wooden board with the edges rounded off.
- Walnut stain.
- Alcohol, an aluminum scouring pad and brushes.
- Several grades of sandpaper.
- Varnish.
- Iron or gold-colored fittings.
Steps:
1. Recovering an old piece of furniture. In the event you are starting
off with a drawer from an old, 'luna' style piece of furniture with a vertical
mirror and in which the top is broken, you will have to make a new cover. Measure
the top, leaving a few extra centimeters on each side so that the cover will stick
out a bit. As the board is made of new wood, the work will be more involved
and we will handle this separately.
2. Sand down the surface of the wood until it is very smooth to the
touch. Apply walnut stain until you reach the tone of the furniture you
are trying to restore. Paint it, applying as many coats as are necessary.
Remember to let each coat dry before applying the next one.
3. Clean the drawer well with the scouring pad and alcohol, both inside
and outside. Don't forget the legs either.
4. When the drawer is completely dry, will attach the board to the drawer
using fittings that serve as hinges that allow us to open and close the
drawer easily. The fittings can be black for a rustic look, or gold for a
more classic image.
5. Check to make sure it opens and closes perfectly. Finally, varnish it
all evenly.
Advices: - This piece of furniture can be used in two ways: as a box, in which case
we can even nail the cover on, or as a chest, which is more practical,
opening the upper part. As it is a piece with a lot of room and the legs
are tall, you can use it as a chest of drawers in a bedroom or to store
blankets or sheets.
- If you want to use it in a more modern bedroom,
paint it any other color. This kind of restoration can also be done with
nightstand, a chest of drawers that is in poor condition or a console
table for a foyer.
