Build rustic shelves with slate
Utility: Take advantage of unused space
Difficulty: Low
Cost: Low
Materials:
- Seveal pieces of slate.
- Cement putty.
- Floor wax.
- Two metal butterfly nuts to hold up the slate.

Steps:
1. Take two three pieces of slate that are similar and more or less level. They need to look like shelves. Clean them well with soap and water.
2. Measure carefully the area where you are going to install the shelves. Make a groove in the wall to insert the slate so it will stay up. Fill the groove with cement putty and stick the slate it, holding it tightly. When the cement dries, put the wing nuts under the slate. Insert them into the wall with strong Rawl plugs so they suppor the weight of the shelves. Use two per shelf if they are not more than 60 cm wide.
3. Once the shelves are well-set into the wall, apply wax to them so they are smooth and dont scratch the objects we place on them.

Advices:
- These shelves are rustic, so they can only be installed in country homes or ones with that style of decoration. They look great in a bathroom, a bedroom with a wall of exposed tiles, stone or slate itself. These days many houses have complete walls or floors made of slate.
- You can add indirect light, which gives a cozy look. You can also install these in a corner as seen in the photo. It does not take up a lot of space, and will break up the monotony of a hallway or a modern bathroom.
