Preventing plant diseases
by Beln Campos
Most plants are vulnerable to damage from certain kinds of fungi, bacterias and viruses. Some inevitably die, and others deform so badly they look awful. It is easier and more efficient to prevent these diseases than to treat them.

One of the best ways to avert diseases is to buy plants that are sturdy, healthy and robust. A good plant resists diseases better, especially if you put it in the right place and look after
it properly.

Many plant species prefer sunny spots, while others prefer shade. So if possible plant each plant where its requirements are best met.

Watering is another factor in disease prevention. Sprinklers increase the risk of infection from fungi on wet leaves. Whenever possible, it is better to water with a trickle system. Excess watering leaves the soil permanently wet and favors root diseases caused by phitophtora and pythium.

If the earth is rich in clay, try giving it drainage or improve it with sand or worm humus. The remains of pruning sick plants are a good vector for spreading diseases, so it is best to burn those remains and disinfect all tools. Don't use the trimmings to make compost unless you are sure they are healthy.

Plants need room. Don't plant them too close to each other. Air needs to circulate to reduce atmospheric moisture that helps spread oidium and mildew when the weather is warm.

Controlling weeds is another point to keep in mind. Many of them carry bacteria, fungi and viruses and pass them on to plants via air, water, etc.

Battling insect infestation is another way to avert disease. These creatures go from one plant to the next, biting leaves and spreading agents responsible for diseases.

If after following these tips your plants still come down with a disease, don't hesitate to
treat it accordingly. And if you don't know what agent is causing the disease, contact a professional.
