There are a great variety of models but the main difference lies in the power, which is expressed in watts. Hairdryers aimed at domestic use usually have between 1000 and 2000 watts. The greater the power, the greater the air volume and, as such, the hair dries faster.
Modern devices usually come with accessories with features for every kind of hair, such as diffusers for curls and soft perms, for example. There are also models which, as well as drying, enable you to straighten the hair thanks to an air concentrator (a nozzle which directs and concentrates the flow towards the chosen area). The most complete systems can include, along with the concentrator and the diffuser, a round or semicircular brush, combs, tongs, a vanity case...
Travel irons and those which can be used to straighten or curl hair, may come with certain models. It is also easy to find small hairdryers on the market which are very practical for travelling.
On the other hand, certain models allow users to change the voltage. This allows you to use them in countries with different voltages. If they have a safety thermostat, this guarantees that they are protected against overheating and as such the hairdryers useful life will be between two and three times longer than if it did not have one.
Hairdryers are rarely battery powered. As such, the longer the cable, the more comfortable and easier they are to manage, as the user will have greater freedom of movement. An ergonomic design, light weight and non-slip handle are other features which must be considered when choosing a hairdryer as they make using it more comfortable.
Avant-garde technology
The most avant-garde designs offer a modern and professional way of drying hair. They are very modern hairdryers due to their features and technical characteristics. They have noise reduction techniques, an instant cold phase button for longer-lasting results, an adjustable air concentrator for more precise styling, a hook to hang them for greater comfort etc.
The cold drying function activates a flow of cool air so as to obtain a quick result. This temperature change sets the hair very effectively. When drying hair it is advisable to use high speeds at moderate temperatures. In this way a quick result is obtained and the hair is not damaged. For styling, lower speeds are recommended to prevent the hair from being untidy.
Generally, these devices have at least two speeds and a temperature selector which can regulate from two up to eight different temperatures. The most advanced models create an ionic flow over the hair, leaving it shinier and silkier.
Humidity, brushing and pollution charge hair with static electricity, which ends up lifting the follicles and giving it a curly look which ruins the hair style. Thanks to this ionic technology, particles charged with negative energy act on the hair exerting a moisturising and revitalising action which eliminates the static effect. The result, shinier hair with a close to professional finish.
At the same time, these hairdryers pulverise the drops of water until they are converted into molecules which are so tiny that they penetrate the outer layer of the hair and hydrate its cuticle.
Maintenance
The hairdryers which are sold nowadays must meet certain safety standards, include the correct warrantees and come with practical, explanatory manuals. Generally, to a greater or lesser extent, they all meet the efficiency, drying speed and noise parameters. They are also resistant and hard-wearing.
It is essential that this type of appliance is able to continue working after it is dropped accidentally, for example. Current legislation requires them to work after being dropped three times from a height of almost one metre.
Just like the majority of small electrical appliances, hairdryers require little maintenance. They can be cleaned by removing the back, which is normally screwed on, and using a brush to remove the dirt which can be found on the protective vent. A hairdryer should never be cleaned whilst it is plugged in.
