Natural Excursions at Easter
by Javier Palazn
Easter's approaching and an ideal way of enjoying these days off is to increase your knowledge of Spain's varied geography. Here we offer a few routes and excursions to help you discover some of the country's most attractive natural landscapes and villages.

Valle de Valdeolea (Cantabria/Palencia)
A dozen tiny 12th-century Romanesque churches can be visited in the Valle de Valdeolea,
a valley straddling Cantabria and Palencia. Visiting these temples enables you not only to enjoy the remarkable Romanesque architecture and sculpture, but also the fantastic frescoes hidden inside the walls of these churches. The most attractive rural landscapes are found in Valberzoso, Mata de Hoz, Santolalla-La loma, Henestrosas, Reinosilla, Laya, Olea, Las Quintanillas, Barriopalacio and Matarrepudio. This historically fascinating route also takes in five 16th-century palaces and three Roman bridges.

Valle de Babia (Leon)
A mystical landscape located between the mountains of Asturias and the Leonese plateau. One of the most enchanting features of this valley of migrating flocks is the river Luna. Slopes, green pastures, stones paths and fences are just some of the landscapes offered by this valley in which you can trek or visit some of the villages located in the flatlands. Among the most charming villages, with emblazoned houses and remains of forts, hermitages and churches are Villafeliz, Ubia, Cospedal, Robledo, Huergas and Riolago.

Valle del Bo (Lleida)
Located in the high Pyrenees, specifically in the region of Alta Ribagora. It was declared
a UNESCO heritage area due to the high artistic and architectural value of its monuments, included the parish churches of San Feliu, Santa Eulalia, Natividad de la Madre de Dios and Sant Joan de Bo, as well as the hermitage of San Quirze de Tall. Also worth mentioning is the ski station of Bo-Tall or the spa of Caldes de Bo.

Parque Natural de Sierra Mgina (Jan)
A natural landscape crowned by the peak of Mgina, the region's highest at 2,167 metres. One of its main characteristics is its abrupt topography, ideal for trekking or climbing, and the abundance of clay-based soils, creating numerous underground caves in which to practise caving. It is also a great area for mountain biking aficionados.

Valle del Jerte (Cceres)
A traditional area of migrating flocks where the cattle pastures on the northern plateaux extend from the Sierra de Gredos to the city of Plasencia. Some of the surprises hidden in this valley are the paths that snake round the mountains, the cattle pastures or the placid waterfalls of San Pedro. Sporting, educational and entertainment activities include trekking, cycling, fishing, abseiling, climbing, horse-riding and cultural visits to the Cherry Museum and the Water Studies Centre or Natural Reserve of the Garganta de los Infiernos.

Parque Natural de Covadonga (Asturias)
This park is home to the Covadonga Sanctuary, a genuine meeting point of art, religion and history. Located deep within the mountains and trees of the Picos de Europa, this is one of the region's main tourist and pilgrimage centres. It is advisable not to miss the Cueva santa, above the lake of the river Deva; the Fuente de los Siete Caos, the tomb of Pelayo, the cerro de Cueton, the route from Segenco to Covadonga or the Vega de Orandi.

Parque Natural del Lago de Sanabria (Zamora)
The undoubted highlight of this region is the Lake of Sanabria, situated in the northeastern part of the province of Zamora and the largest lake of glacier origin in Spain. Although summer is when the largest number of visitors flock to its cold waters, spring is an ideal time to visit the surroundings. Apart from its high ecological value, the area also has important historical, artistic and cultural features. These include the interesting Romanesque monastery of Santa Mara, in San Martn de Castaeda, where the Natural Park's Studies Centre is located, the urban centre of Puebla de Sanabria and the numerous examples of popular architecture located in the region's many villages.
