Rope bridges: crossing awe-inspiring obstacles
by Paco Meseguer
A classic construction which has been used by man since time immemorial to cross rivers, ravines or large trees has recently become yet another essential adventure sport and a vital part of activity and entertainment centres.

Crossing a river or ravine on a completely safe bridge that continually swings and moves is a fascinating experience. This is possible thanks to the what is known as a rope or monkey bridge made from three ropes: one for supporting the feet and two for the hands. The latter two are logically parallel and at a level height, while the former is lower and in between the other two.

A rope bridge is basically an inverted triangle, the lower rope allowing you to walk with your toes pointing outwards. A simple construction such as this allows you to move from one end of canyons, rivers or vertical passes to the other. This makes for a fun and exciting adventure, especially if the height you are crossing is considerable.

Security measures
Security in this type of construction is of the highest importance, which means that both sides of the bridge should be well anchored to support the weight of those crossing the bridge. As an additional precautionary measure, all who cross these bridges should be attached to a security rope, which saves the adventurer from falling into the gap if he or she stumbles. A highly unlikely event, but it is best to be safe.

The first piece of advice to give those wishing to cross a rope bridge is to approach any one of a number of adventure companies operating in Spain which organise these types of adventure activities and which generally include crossing rope bridge as one of their attractions. If the company meets all current safety requirements, it should provide all the necessary safety equipment (ropes, harnesses, helmets) and all the instructions that the intrepid adventurer requires before crossing the bridge.

Once you have located the company and the spot you wish to cross, another recommendation is to always go in the company of friends (the fun will then be guaranteed in that you will be sharing your experiences crossing such an archaic construction with others) and, above all, wear comfortable clothing and footwear.
