SWAP: a virtual coach in the swimming pool
by Mara Fernndez
If doing laps in the pool bores you, you need to hear about this revolutionary gadget that has just arrived in Spain. It is called SWAP, and its originality lies in a sort of snorkeling tube that lets you listen to instructions from a virtual coach while in the pool. Thus you take part in a fitness class or a session of aquatic relaxation.

Communication without cables or wires
SWAP is a new kind of swimming gear that turns the pool into the perfect place to get in shape, train or either begin or perfect the classical swimming strokes, thanks to a coach (who can be in the pool) or taped text that the swimmer hears without getting out of the water. How is this possible? Thanks to a radio transmitter, a wireless microphone for the pool coach and a pair of accessories for the swimmer: a special mask and a hermetically sealed tube equipped with a battery-powered mechanism that receives radio waves. It is all patented by its inventors, the company founded by Jacques Cousteau, Aqua Sphere.

Start the class without a monitor
Once you have found a pool with this system (through www.aqua-sphere.biz or [email protected] you can find the SWAP centers in Spain), a swimmer with an
Aqua FM mask and snorkel can take a class with a coach or a recorded session. In
both cases the swimmer does not need to stop swimming in order to follow the training instructions. The system lets them hear the instruction or music in the water. The mask
and tube let you breathe permanently with your head in the water, without turning for air.
So your neck does not tire out.

Thanks to this new technique the swimmer enjoys personalized monitoring without the coach having to interrupt with advice. And people who are not part of a team have swim freely but with an exercise program designed by a specialist, which can be combined with music to make it all more pleasant.

Versions for every taste
It looks to be the swimming technique of the future, and the variety is ample. The recorded version comes in three options with different levels of expertise to suit people with differents goals and states of fitness.
- Beginning and perfecting swimming techniques. Includes three levels that go from floating exercises for people to get used to the water to a semi-professional program for perfecting each stroke. There is also a series of exercises for improving both technique and style.
- Swimming fitness. It is a program aquatic training for the heart, based on aerobic-style exercises. It is the perfect complement for people who do conventional swimming and want to tone up their muscles even more.
- SWAM. Sessions of music therapy or relaxation. A didactic course that combines a phase of warming up the muscles and body with work aimed at relaxing the muscles and conscious breathing. It is a good way to relax in a 45-minute session that is less agitated than SWAP. All you need to know is how to swim in a pool if you want reap its benefits.

Utilizing water
Besides providing the benefits of swimming, indoor or outdoor pools are good for people who want to do exercise on their own. In a pool you can do all kinds of exercise with less effort but getting big results. By floating, the bones and joints are relieved from head to foot, which allows the body to relax while we work the muscles without exhausting ourselves. Water is a perfect aid for getting in shape.
- Toughening abdominal muscles. With you back against the wall of the pool, hold on with your arms stretched out until the back is completely against that wall. With the water level below your chest, raise your legs to a right angle with your torso. Do three series of 15 repetitions.
- Strengthen arms. Again with the water below your chest, but standing in the pool: take a weight of several kilos in each hand and with your legs spread, raise both arms to the surface and lower them again. Do three series of 15 repetitions.
