With his overwhelming triumph, the 2001 season was a walk in the park for Michael Schumacher. He dominated the championship from start to finish, earning 9 victories and 5 podium finishes. With this, his fourth world title, he got a little closer to the legendary Fangio.

The real competition was that for the runner-up spot. David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello fought long and hard for the position but in the end the honours went to the Scottish driver.

With regards to Spanish representation in the championship, the Catalan driver Pedro Mart�nez de la Rosa ended the season in sixteenth place and in that season Fernando Alonso, the great Spanish hope for future championships, made his debut for the Minardi team.
