This is the number used in fuels to classify them according to their ignition temperature. It is obtained by comparing the ignition point of a fuel with the tion point of a mixture with a percentage of cetane and alpha-methyl-naphtaline. The higher the cetane number the the higher the ignition point of the fuel and the higher the compression ratio can be.
