A system that progressively brings a drive shaft into play with another. There are two sets of discs placed alternately. each one moving with a shaft. As they unite the friction makes one drag the other. In cars it is used to pass force from one shaft to another in four wheel drive systems or as a self-blocking mechanism on a differential.
