LED lights (Light Emitting Diodes) are a small electronic switch that creates a flow of electrons that generate electromagnetic radiation in the form of light. These diodes have been around since the 60s and are used in most electronic devices. Among their advantages are their small size and their low consumption, the light is brighter and not concentrated in just one point, in addition they last much longer.
These lights are very well-known in the world of motoring since they are used in lights, indicators and as third brake light. In the United States, LED lights on headlights are legal, and are mounted on vehicles as standard. In Europe this is expected to happen in 2008, once they have passed the relevant approval tests. A good example of their impending introduction over the next few years are the projects being made by makes like Lexus and Audi, who are preparing models that incorporate these advances, like the 600 LS and R8 respectively.
This new lighting system, also allows new possibilities for the design and look on the front end of the vehicle, thanks mainly to the fact that they require less space for assembly and they can be mounted much more freely. At a technical level, one of the main obstacles that LEDs have, is their cooling. High temperatures cause malfunctions and is stopping the sector from taking advantage of their great potential. |
