After more than 55 years designing and manufacturing petrol engines, both two and four stroke, for the markets of automotion, industrial vehicles and motor tools - from a 25cc unit to powerful engines used in Formula 1 - Honda has decided to make a diesel engine for its cars. Yet, the diesel technology is not very well known on Honda products, since at the moment the Civic range offers the 1.7 CTDi equipped with a direct injection common rail diesel engine.

The new turbodisel engine, a 2.2 litre with 4 cylinders, 16 valves and common rail technology is made out of aluminium and was developed for the European market. It will begin its standard production on the Accord and Accord Tourer models. The design priority was to produce a diesel engine with the same levels of precision as on the gasoline units and with reduced noise levels at all speeds, from neutral to the maximum cruising speed, and without any vibrations.
According to its creators, when it reaches the maximum torque, over 340Nm and a power of 140bhp, the engine can accelerate and respond excellently at low speeds on urban roads, improving the level of response and acceleration in the middle rev range and keep a high speed. The elevated torque level limits the amount of gear changes necessary. |
