This season deserved to end. The absolute control shown by Michael Schumacher and Ferrari has turned the World Championship into a red monopoly which could not be tolerated. In the last few races any dash of interest and emotion had disappeared as well as McLaren and William's level of competitiveness.
The only comment of any interest to fans was the possibility of weighing down the cars and someone even came up with the idea of changing the drivers. It was even rumoured that Schumacher would be found at the wheel of a Minardi, which, in more than one place, was considered as being a real insult. What is true is than in some way the cars should be made on a par or that the enormous difference between team budgets should be limited.
Purists say that the cannot establish limits in competition. This is true, but it is also true that it is a competition which survives from the money earned from the television and the people sat in front of the screen are getting bored. When this happens, all alarm bells sound and the only worry for Bernie Ecclestone is how to silence them.
