This was his best race and hardly anything was seen of him. There was no podium finish nor were there any special moments or major headlines in the newspapers. However, Fernando Alonso put on an extraordinary show of maturity in Imola which confirms him as being a great driver once again. It is because he raced as if he were a veteran. He made up two places on the starting grid, he adapted well to a change in strategy by Renault and was able to drive to the maximum with the car both full or empty and he even knew how to speed up at the end and clock up his fastest laps whilst have to put up with being hounded by Juan Pablo Montoya. He finished the race in sixth place with engine power being the all important factor. Alonso is already among the best best drivers as only the best drivers are capable of being so effective under any circumstances. It shouldn't be forgotten that his engines is not very powerful and that Renault should do something about this urgently. The next race is is Barcelona on a circuit which doesn't suit his style of driving. But Alonso will surely be in there again, amongst the best. Back
