Alonsos run of bad luck began at the fateful race in Monaco, 23rd May. That day his incident in the tunnel, involving Ralf Schumacher, prevented him from obtaining second or, perhaps, first position. That was the first podium to get away from him. At the Nrburgring his luck did not change. He was third, but the steering blocked and he had to slow his pace. With great difficulties he finished fifth. Without incidents third position was his behind the invincible Ferraris.
After the GPs in Monaco and Europe came the brief North American tour, but the change of continent has not brought a change of luck for the Renault driver. In Montreal the car went wonderfully and the team got the tactics right. Third position was more than feasible, but a semi-axle broke. At Indianapolis he made a spectacular start, overtaking from ninth on the grid up to third position. On this occasion he had a puncture and the podium, clearly within his reach, vanished before his very eyes.
These are a total of four podiums that he could have added in just one month and they could have been added to the one he got at the first GP of the season in Australia, but the car and accidents are an important part of the F1 game and Alonso is not having much luck now. The Spanish driver is staying calm. He knows that things will change "Personally I am very happy with my work in the last few races. I am going to try and carry on racing at this level and if I do so, I hope to be among the leaders at any time ". |
