System of classification The addition of the times of the two flying laps will decide the starting order. Last year the pole was decided just by the second flying lap. Another novelty inn this section is that the first flying lap is on the Saturday and the second on the Sunday, four hours before the race.
Tyres On the Friday training sessions the cars can use two sets of dry tyres and will have to choose one of them. From then on they will have three sets of the same tyres: the first is for training on the Saturday and the second for the flying laps and the whole race. There will be a third set that can be used if they have a puncture. Wet tyres can only be used if the race director allows them.
Just one engine One of the biggest challenges in the pre-season for the engineers was to create powerful engines which at the same time are reliable, since each engine has to withstand two complete GPs (around 1 400km).
If the engine breaks before the classification there is a penalty of ten places on the starting grid. If the team decides to change the engine after the classification the driver will start in the final place. On the other hand if the engine breaks in the race the team can change it for the next race without receiving any penalty.
The latter could produce some tricks and cheating. Max Mosley knows this and although he hopes it does not happen, he has warned that he will introduce measures to stop them If something is done on purpose we will know. If anything is suspicious, we will ask the race marshalls to examine the question in detail.
Pit stops Fans will not be able to enjoy the spectacular tyre changes in just seven seconds. The pit stops will now be just for refuelling.
