THE BOUTIQUE THE WEATHER INTERACTIVE CAMPSA GUIDE
30 YEARS OF RACING BEHIND US
OBJECTIVE DISTRIBUTION
The racing calendar for 1970 was divided among three already well-trained drivers of the Repsol Motor Racing Team.
Alberto Ruiz Gimnez would take part in the complete Spanish Rally Championship, seconded, on occasions by Eladio Doncel, while Jos Manuel Lencina, who was combining his law studies with racing.

At the same time as the driver line-up was being decided, plans were being finalized for the incorporation of new co-drivers, chosen by each individual driver. This led to Rafael Castaeda accompanying the already famous Ruiz Gimnez, popularly known as oso (the bear), in his rallies, while Juan Antonio Conde, Fernando Porrero, Juan Garca de la Rasilla, Juan Carlos Ooro, etc., alternated in the co-drivers seat, driving with Eladio Doncel.

Although no loose ends were left, the 1970 season was begun using rented cars as the two Porsche 911-Ss ordered from Stuttgart were delayed until the Orense Rally which began towards the end of July. This is why Alberto Ruiz Gimnez began the championship in the Rally Fallas, Valencia, with a Seat 1430, gaining an overall fourth position and repeating this result in a Porsche 911-S group 6 with 210 HP, in the Basque Navarro Rally. This was when oso along with the French-Basque driver, Marc Etchebers, also backed by Repsol, had a good chance at an out and out victory until the last minute.

Repsol participation in the circuits was sporadic, limited to a few Sport-Prototype races, collaborating with some teams, as was the case with the Belgian, Teddy Pilette, who competed in the Jarama behind the wheel of a Lola T-70, although with little success as, in the twenty-fourth lap, he was forced to drop out due to engine failure.

However, in the Cars and Mountain section, triumph, for the first time of the season, began to light up the face of the Repsol Team. Jos Manuel Lencina won the Jarama circuit in a BMW 2002 Ti, in the Homenaje a las Provincias race. He also came second in the Trofeo Deporte Espaol (Spanish Sports Trophy), which took place in Jarama. By now the BMW 2002 Ti was desperately overworked, however it continued to resist, winning the Uphills of Canencia and Morecuera, with Lencina in the driving seat.

The rally season was successfully following its course, with Ruiz Gimnez-Puyale, driving the Porsche 911, coming in second in the Criterium Luis de Baviera, and Jean Egretaud achieving fourth in the Pikoln Rally. Ruiz Gimnez also competed in this race in a rented 911 T, as the 911-A , with special 2.2 litre pistons ordered from Germany, did not arrive in time. Eladio Doncel was also a competitor in this rally, driving an R8 Gordini, co-piloted by Ricardo Muoz. Unfortunately they didnt finish as they were penalized over 14 minutes for running out of petrol and therefore couldnt continue in the second stage.

As the middle of the season approached, the championship title was still undecided despite the fact that Ruiz Gimnez was leading the championship, the need for the two new 2.2 litre Porsche 911 Ss which had been ordered from the factory at the beginning of the year, was becoming increasingly urgent.

On the eve of the Orense Rally, and in order to gain time, it was decided to go to Germany and collect the cars directly, in the hope of having them in Spain in time for the Galician rally. The cars arrived in time but one of them was faulty. It was discovered that the car driven by oso had a mal-functioning starting motor. It was Eladio Doncel himself who came up with the solution, deciding to take the starting motor of his 911 apart, installing it in the car driven by Ruiz Gimnez instead. The result of the rally couldnt have been better, Ruiz Gimnez drove to victory and Eladio Doncel-Conde came in fourth.

The arrival of the two Porsche 911 Ss, had an immediate effect and resulted in one victory after another on the fast tracks of the rallies. Ruiz Gimnez appeared invincible, winning the rallies of Cid and Ras Bajas, Sherry, as well as coming in second in the Spanish Rally, etc. In those races not won by Gimnez, Eladio Doncel was the one to dominate the first positions, with triumphs in the Ras Altas rallies, the Oviedo Rally, that of 2000 Virajes, Barcelona-Andorra, and the highly renowned Firestone Rally.

An avalanche of Repsol victories placed the drivers of the Repsol Motor Racing Team at the top of the championship.

Nevertheless, the splitting of the trophies between Ruiz Gimnez and Doncel gave rise to a series of conflicts due to the fact that both had equal possibilities of gaining the title when it came to the Costa del Sol Rally, which would close the season. In view of the situation, Eladio Doncel who had been appointed Team manager that year, opted for the Almeria test. This meant that he automatically renounced his chance at the Spanish Championship. Ruiz Gimnez was unlucky and had to leave the course due to an accident. The victory however, was assured thanks to Doncels win which allowed points to be blocked so that Alberto Ruiz Gimnez and Rafael Castaeda could be proclaimed out-and-out champions of the 1970 Spanish Rallies.

In the circuits and the mountains, the season of the 70s could also be considered quite brilliant. Jos Manuel Lencina had a significant number of wins in the BMW 2002, which were later converted into the Sub championship of the then highly respected Spanish Mountain Championship.
