Whereas the Lancia HF�s were no longer fit for competition, but the Porsche 911�s were basically the star cars in the rallies of those years both in World and European championships. In fact, Porsche, among other victories, had won three consecutive Monte Carlo Rallies in 1968, 1969 and 1970, with Vic Elford and Bj�rn Waldegaard at the wheel.

The Porsche 911 was the car of the moment, REPESA was ambitious, and its Repsol brand had already been struggling with rival brands for the sales leadership for a while. As a result it looked like the moment had arrived to give a completely new look to the Repsol Motor racing Team, and attack the 1970 season on all fronts.

In 1970, Luis Valero Bermejo, president of REPESA, urged Eladio Doncel, to come up with a budget that would allow the Repsol Motor-racing team to face the upcoming season armed with full guarantees. At the same time he nominated Doncel for the position of Team manager.

With Andr�s Gim�nez Calder�n as the pivotal point of the Repsol team, the programme for 1970 was principally focused on the Spanish Rally Championship and the speed circuits. The new budget, which had been presented to REPESA at the beginning of the year and had been approved by the management of the oil company, totalled 8.500.000 pesetas.

This figure included all expenses: from the purchase of two Porsche 908�s for the uphill races and various track participations, to the acquisition of assistance vehicles and the financing of raw materials, salaries and operational costs.

Back then, the factory cost of a Porsche 911-S, just off the assembly line and road ready, was approximately 500,000 pesetas. However, apart from that it also had to undergo specific preparation for rallies, although this was not too difficult as it only involved alterations to the suspension, dual ignition for the engine, a special petrol tank with a 100 litre capacity, interior fittings (seat belts, gear sticks), and little else. Nonetheless, these alterations actually cost more than the car itself, coming to a total of 550,000 pesetas.
