The WSC says goodbye to Antonio Cobas

The big WSC family held an emotional minutes silence on the Sunday before the 125cc race in memory of Antonio Cobas, who died on Wednesday 24th April at the ge of 51 after a long illness.
Antonio Cobas, technical director of the Camel Honda team and one of the best known and most respected professionals in the MotoGP community, took his first steps in the world of motoring in Formula 1430, but soon after that he dedictaed all his talent to the world of two wheeled machines, a passion that kept him with forces right up to his last days. Cobas was a wizard when dealing with the technology of the chassis; in 1978 his first bike was born, a Siroko that became the first home made bike in Spanish 250cc. with a Rotax engine.

After four years working on that project, Cobas founded the Kobas mark together with Sito Pons and Manolo Burillo, with who they raced in the WSC for the first time and two years later (1984) celebrated their first victory. His enthusiasm for innovation later took him to work with Jacinto Moriana and they created the well-known JJ Cobas with which lex Crivill was World 125cc Champion in 1989. Joan Garriga, Carlos Cards, Luis Miguel Reyes and Alberto Puig among others also raced on this machine.

Since 1989, the year of the second world title for Sito Pons in 250cc, Antonio Cobas has been linked to Sitos career, with who he jumped up to 500cc to help riders like Crivill, Czech, Puig, Capirossi, Barros, Ukawa and Biaggi. All of them, except the Japanese rider who is not in the WSC MotoGP this year, met last Sunday in front of the Sito Pons pits to say good bye to him.
