At the age of eight, Barros was already participating in the Brazilian championship. In 1986, at the age of fifteen, he made his debut in what was then the smallest category, 80 cc. From there he moved up to 250cc, where he raced for two seasons before passing to 500cc, the category where he has achieved his greatest successes. Throughout these 19 seasons, this 33 year old Brazilian has started 234 GPs, another record in his possession.
The Repsol Honda Team rider has managed to score points in 174 (162 in MotoGP) of these 234 races. With his fifth position at the Nelson Piquet he was able to equal the figure set by Giacomo Agostini, the legendary Italian rider who led this ranking. Later his good performances in Germany and UK meant that Barros continues to increase this number. Loris Capirossi, with 167 races among the points, and Max Biaggi, with 154, are both illustrious veterans who threaten beat this record.
lex Barros has achieved his greatest success as a rider with Honda, a company that he has won six times with in MotoGP. His best season was in 2002, when he won two races and finish fourth in the WSC, although he had options of finishing runner-up right to the end. In 2003 he moved to Yamaha, where he did not have much luck, and now he is home again where he hopes to continue adding to his excellent figures. |
