| Octane index |
|
The measure of the antiknock value of a fuel is called this way. In the auto industry. the petrol spreads to self ignition (detonation) without the need for a spark because of engine compression. A quality petrol withstands high compression without detonating has a high antiknock value. This value is expressed with the so called octane number (NO). To determine this experimental fuels made up of heptane and isoctane are taken as reference. Heptane has low resistance to detonation and a NO value is established for it equal to zero. On the contrary. the isoctane has a high resistance to ignition and a NO value equal to 100 is establsihed. A mixture of 90 isoctane and 10 heptane is said to have a NO index of 90.
