| Overdrive |
|
Device placed at the exit of the manual transmission to get a very long ratio between the gear changes. When the mainshaft in the manual transmission rotates quicker than the primary this is called overdrive or superdrive. This means that the speed of the vehicle increases without increasing the number of revolutions. It was very typical on American cars. It disappeared when vehicles started to use five speed gearboxes.

A device placed at the exit of the gearbox to get a very long gear ratio. This was lost when cars began to use five speed gearboxes. It was an other set of gears that was used on North American vehicles so that they could circulate with the very low revs.
