| Expansion |
Phase in the combustion cycle of an engine where the expansion of the burnt gases takes place. It is the only phase of the piston that produces work on the crankshaft. During the expansion phase the piston is pushed by the pressure of the gases from the Top Dead Centre (TDC) to the Bottom Dead Centre (BDC). It finishes when the exhaust valve opens.

| Expansion ratio |
Expresses the expansion that the volume of the combustion chamber undergoesa during the expansion stroke. It is the variation or ratio that exists between the volume of the cylinder when it is at Top Dead Centre and when it is at Bottom Dead Centre.
