| Degree of viscosity S.A.E. |
|
The S.A.E. (Society Automotive Engineers) is the American technical nomenclature used for oils to determine its viscosity. There are two criteria used: those with the letter W (winter) whose properties have been determined at 18 below zero. and those that take the initials S.A.E.. made at 100 above zero. So. a S.A.E. 30W oil indicates that its viscosity is 30 on the 18 below zero scale and a S.A.E. 60 has a viscosity 60 on the 100 scale. In a combined nomenclature (for example S.A.E. 30W60) we find multigrade oils that maintain their properties at different temperatures.
