| Petrol |
|
Automobile fuel made up of a mixture of hydrocarbons. coming from the cracking process of crude oil. The molecular weight of its parts is not very high and are very volatile. Its capacity to ignite is measured with the octane index compared to a very inflammable hydrocarbon (isoctane) and an other that is not very inflammable (n-heptane). So. a petrol with an octane index of 98 is equal to a mixture of hydrocarbons made up of 98 parts isoctane and 2 of n-heptane. Americans use the term gasoline.
