| Piston rings |
|
Pistons have rings in grooves on their external surface and these put pressure on the cylinder walls and guarantee a seal. Their objective is to reduce as much as possible the surface contact between the piston and the cylinders. and to reduce any friction. but maintaining the air tight seal at the same time for the oil and gases at any temperature and under high pressure. There are two types of rings: compression and scrapers. The former are usually made of steel. The scraper rings. on the other hand. are mounted below the compression rings. and eliminate the excess oil during the the pistons up and down movement.
