| Pick-up |
Parts that detect the state of a mechanical part. such as speed of rotation and the position of the crankshaft for example (the case of the ignition and electronic injection). The pick-up is a small piece. made up of a permanent magnet and a winding connected to an ECU (electronic control unit). A pick-up and a sensor differ because the former detects the positions or speeds of mechanical parts and the latter measures values of magnitudes like pressure and temperature.

| Piston |
Cylindrical moving part of an alternating combustion engine that is responsible for compressing the fuel mixture. closing the combustion chamber at the bottom and picking up the energy developed during the expansion of the burnt gases. It is connected to the crankshaft through the gudgeon pin and connecting rod. The piston works at high temperatures as it is in contact with the burnt gases and needs cooling. It is divided into head and skirt. The head is on the top and the skirt is responsible for housing the gudgeon pin and to guide the piston inside the cylinder sleeve. On a conventional engine the average speed of a piston is usually between 10 and 20m/s.
